Description

World Literature: a Study of International Writers

Studying World Literature is a perfect chance to introduce your high school student to non-English cultures. By reading excellent books from authors around the world, your student will understand that everyone doesn’t live or believe as he does.

Additionally, our World Literature course also connects literature to important historical events. This will grow your students’ understanding of literature and history.  One more benefit? Reading excellent writers helps to develop solid writing skills.

In this full-year course, your high school student will read novels, short stories, and poetry.  Your student will read books from authors such as:

  • Homer (Ancient Greece, pre-Christian)
  • King Solomon and others  (Old Testament authors)
  • Dante Alighieri (Italian, Middle Ages. and pictured on our cover)
  • Alexandre Dumas (France, mid 1800s)
  • Henryk Sienkiewicz (Poland, set in the time of Christ, written in the mid-1800s)
  • Bankim Chandra Chatterjee (Indian, set in the later 1800s)
  • Anton Chekhov (Russian, early-mid 1900s)
  • Guy de Maupassant (France, early-mid 1900s)
  • Leo Tolstoy (Russia, the late 1800s)
  • Aleksander Solzhenitsyn (Russia, mid 1900s)

Also, our World Literature course includes poetry from Japanese poets in the text. (So there’s one less book to buy.)
